“Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart” (Luke 18:1)
We have a porch swing in our front yard, and I was outside enjoying it one morning. A few minutes later, our gray-striped cat approaches. Not wanting to get cat hair all over my clothes, I picked my feet up off the ground and stuck them straight out in front of me. This did not deter her one bit. She simply purred and walked under my feet rubbing her back and head on my shoes. When I got up she followed. She was dedicated. She was persistent; she hoped constantly for me to reach down and scratch her head, which I eventually did.
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells a parable of a persistent widow. She searches for justice and does not stop intreating the judge, day after day, until she is given an answer. Jesus gives the illustration to help us understand that when we seek justice, we are to take it before the Lord and wait on His timing. The judge avenged the widow because he did not want to be wearied by her. God does not heed us because He is weary of us, rather He heeds our prayer because He is a just God. And it is He to whom vengeance belongs1. We are not to take it into our own hands. We lay it constantly before the throne. No matter how long justice may seem delayed, God will take care of it. He is not slack in His promises2; He fulfills them in His timing. Scripture’s encouragement is for us to not lose heart, nor take it in to our own hands. We lay it before the Ultimate Judge, and trust Him to act in His timing. While my cat was not seeking justice, she continued to come before me seeking her request, and I answered. Even more so does our Father hear and answer us.
