As I walked the beach, I watched this small brown and white sandpiper make his way across the glassy wet sand. He would push his beak into the earth, pull it out, and pitter-patter across the shore. When a wave came he simply moved out of the way as it sailed in and then returned to his hunt when it receded. He was dedicated. The waves did not stop him; the people passing by chattering did not hinder him, and the gulls flying overhead did not frighten him.
How deep is our dedication? Are we like the sandpiper, trusting God and His plan that we will not let the hinderances around us stop us? That little, tiny bird knew what he was to do and did not let anything interfere.
When the people of Israel had left Egypt they came before the Red Sea. As the Egyptians closed in from the rear, God’s people grew afraid.1 They began to think they knew what was better (to be back in Egypt as slaves). But God had a plan. All they had to do was trust Him and be obedient.
When Peter calls out to Jesus, after the disciples see Christ walking on water, he begins walking on water at Jesus’ command. However, when the waves come, he doubts.2
Let us not doubt the path God has called us to walk. Let us be like the sandpiper who, despite the waves or people around him, stays focused and dedicated. It is fine to ask God for confirmation, but then walk in steady obedience.
