Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us” (1 Samuel 7:12).
Happy 4th of July, and happy Independence Day! As we celebrate Independence Day, we remember what it took for our country to become independent.
In Scripture, Samuel sets a stone as a remembrance of God’s help in a battle. When the Israelite people were under the leadership of Joshua, God worked the miracle of parting the Jordan River. God then instructed them to take stones as memorials of what God had done, saying, “…when your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ Then you shall answer them…”1 It was a way to remember and tell others of what God had done.
Our nation’s flag is like an Ebenezer. It is a reminder of what has been. It represents moments in our nation’s history that are to be told and honored.
Throughout our own lives God has done many things. Let us not forget these, but rather set up an Ebenezer, a flag, to remind us to look back. Let us declare His faithfulness and goodness to those after us.
I challenge you today, to set a reminder for yourself and others of the things God has done for you. This could be a photograph, a bracelet, a letter, a rock, anything that points you back to what God has done.
You sister in Christ,
Charisa
