There was a fearless little boy who was playing in the water with his dad. He was perched up on his father’s knees so the water would not cover him. This was an exercise to help him practice swimming. With gusto, he would jump up and down on his father and feel the cold water as he splashed himself and laughed. To him it was all fun. The support was necessary, but it also caused the little one to think he could do it all on his own. He began to pull away from the protection about him. “Let me go, Dad. I can do it on my own.” But, to the son’s dismay, his wise father held fast.
You see what the precious little one did not understand was that He could do nothing without the assistance of his daddy.
In our Christian life, we have a tendency to get caught up in how well we are doing. We know God is there, but we forget He is holding us. We begin to think we can do it in our own strength. We pull away and say, “I’ve got this, God. You can let go now.”
We just like the little boy; we cannot swim by ourselves. We see only what our eyes can see; we have a misunderstanding of our abilities and do not know the full danger around us. Without Christ we can do nothing.
So the next time we feel ourselves thinking we can do it on our own, may we remember the encouragement Paul gave others: I can to all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). At the same time, remember we can do nothing good without Him. I pray we will be like Moses who said, God if you are not coming with us, I don’t want to go. (Exodus 33:15). Stay with the Father, and let Him hold you up.

One response to “Let Me Go, Dad!”
Very good analogy. We too often think we are independent and able to take care of ourselves on our own, making decisions and taking actions independently. When things do not go well for us, we wonder why. You are so right. We can do all things with Christ but without him we are weak, not just in body but in heart and mind.
