Driving to work I saw a turkey by the side of the road enjoying whatever bugs were hiding beneath the dark green grass. Her feathers were a beautiful brown and her long slick neck jerked up as the car passed by. She took one step to the side and went back to eating.
This was not the first time I’ve seen this turkey. Last week she was exploring the shrubbery not far from the road. I thought, “That turkey is not very afraid of cars. One day she’s going to get too close and be hit.” After passing the bird, I began to ponder how it could be a lesson for us.
Scripture tells us that sin crouches at the door (Genesis 4:7b). Its desire is to have us, and in the end it will destroy us. The opportunity to sin is always there, like the road. And like the turkey, we have a tendency to get too close. We think we are okay so long as we don’t fully step into it. We’ll just walk beside it. However, the longer we live like that, the more we will become numb to the danger. The first time we might run away, but the second time we might just side step. The more familiar we become with sin, the less the danger bothers us. If we do not change directions, eventually, we will step too close and be hit. One day that bird is going to step onto the road, and when the car comes, she’ll get hit.
If we live our lives thinking that I can dabble with sin, we are fooling ourselves. We are not invincible. We will fall. So avoid it. Move away from the road of sin and walk in the paths of righteousness. Do not be like the turkey and stay beside the road. In the book of Ezekiel it says, “Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?” (Ezekiel 33:11b). Proverbs encourages us to “walk in the way of goodness, and keep to the paths of righteousness” (Proverbs 2:20). But in regards to the path of sin and wickedness: “Avoid it. Do not travel on it; turn away from it and pass on” (Proverbs 4:15). Let us, instead, walk hand in hand with Jesus; He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).
Pray and ask God where in your life you are walking too close to the road. Seek His will and follow in His footsteps.
This may have been a little heavier than normal, but I hope you were still encouraged. May God lead you ever closer to Him.
