The Persistent Pup

Those big brown eyes are just staring at me, looking longingly as I take a bite of my homemade fajita. I don’t give in, those puppy dog eyes will not work on me. But he keeps looking back and forth between the my sister and me. Nope, nope, nope. Yep, yep, yep. She did it first. And then I gave in to those big brown eyes too. He got some of our supper.

As I reflected on that time I dog sat, I was reminded of a story in the Bible where Christ is on a journey somewhere and a woman who was not a Jew met Him. Her daughter had a mental illness and she needed help. She begged Him for a miracle, and Jesus’ reply was, “Should I give what is meant for the children to the dogs?” With great humility she replied, “Lord, even the little dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the Master’s table.” Jesus rewarded her faith and humility with the miracle she asked for. On a much greater scale she received because of her persistence, just like the little persistent puppy I watched who received a portion of my dinner.

God wants all of us to be humble and persistent. He desires for us to look to Him, and to keep asking. His Word says to ask and to knock. We are given the parable of the persistent widow who received justice because of her unwavering appeals to the judge, and Jesus concludes that parable with, “how much more so will your Father in heaven answer you.”

Trust God, serve God, and wait on God. Be a persistent puppy today.
