When God Says, “No” and Closes a Door

Psalm 18: 36 “You enlarged my path under me, so my feet did not slip.”

I had a conversation in the grocery store one day with a friend about God withholding things from us to test us. However, the truth is, God withholds nothing that is good from His children. But what we think is best is not always the case. At the time, my friend had watched God close a door for a scholarship she had applied for. Everything looked like a shoe in, but God said no. Because of the pain, we could not see and did know that He had greater plans for the future.

As good Christians, who were reeling from closed doors, we were trying to encourage each other in the goodness of God. Although it felt like God had pulled the rug out from under us, we had to hold on to Him. We knew that He works in His timing, and we don’t always understand His ways.

I believe this verse in Psalm 18 says it pretty plainly: God is not trying to trip us up, in fact He is doing just the opposite. You see, He wants us to know how far we can trust Him. And trusting Him beyond what we are comfortable with actually broadens our spiritual footing and keeps us from falling. It teaches us the strength of God, His compassion, and His love. Sometimes what we think we need is not His best. As time went by, I got to watch God physically double that scholarship for my friend! The door He opened was far better than what we had planned.

Trust God my friends, He guards you and will keep you from falling. It may not feel like it in the moment, but know that God is always good. So, the next time God closes a door, remember that you can trust in Him, and He will allow you to see the goodness of God in the land of the living.1
