Hiding from God

Did you ever try to hide the cookies you took from the cookie jar behind your back? Or did you ever stuff them in your mouth when you heard Mom coming down the hall? I’m guilty. But why I thought she did not know what I did is beyond me. Of course she knew; I had the crumbs on my face and the chocolate stains on my hands. Yet I still tried to hide it.

When Adam and Eve ate from the tree of good and evil, they tried to hide it from God. They ran and hid themselves. They knew they had done wrong. When we sin, when we do wrong, we too often try to hide it. We don’t want anyone to know. But God already knows. He did not ask Adam and Eve where they were in the Garden because He did not know; He asked them because He wanted them to tell Him the truth. He wants us to be truthful too. When we mess up, don’t try and hide it; tell God and ask for repentance. Turn and do right.

When I did wrong and ate the cookies, Mom would give me an opportunity to tell the truth. Then she would give me an opportunity to do something good. Sometimes that was washing the dishes or cleaning the house, but I can tell you that after I did something good I did not feel like hiding. I was also able to walk around the rest of the day without wondering if I was going to be found out or worrying over what might happen. I was able to walk with a clean conscience and not fear. God wants us to walk with clean consciences and without fear. So don’t try and hide from Him; do right and walk without fear. Paul tells Timothy that he serves God with a pure conscience (2 Timothy 1:3). Let us too serve with a pure conscience.

Lord, may we not want to hide from You. Help us to repent when we do wrong, to turn and do right. May we always tell You the truth. Help us to walk before You with a clean conscience. Teach us to be more like Christ. Amen.
