“Stop trying to steal the pen,” is a phrase I have heard for a while, and I am not sure who to accredit it to. But this concept is something I have always had a hard time with. When I was a little girl my big sister would tell stories, and, if it went a way I did not like, I would tell her to “change the story.” So often we do this very same thing with God.
Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (ESV)
Now to keep it in context, we need to understand that this was a time of slavery and bondage for the Israelite people. It would be one of those times, when I would have said, “No! I don’t like it; change it!” Yet here God says, “I know this time is hard; I know you feel hopeless, but I know how the story ends. Trust Me.”
My sister, Charisa (who also writes for Hagelbooks), bought us matching sweatshirts that said, “God is still writing your story. Stop trying to steal the pen.” I wanted to share that same challenge with you. God is the Master Author who has already seen the end of time. He knows how it all works out. So when you get in the middle of a situation like the children of Israel did, don’t freak out and try to take matters into your own hands. Wait on God. He has this; He has you. Stop trying to write your own story; trust Him with the one He has for you since before you were born. God said to Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5, NKJV).
And just like Jeremiah, God has a plan for you.
