Ready in Season and Out

2 Timothy 4:2 tells us to be ready in season and out of season and to teach the Word of God. I was reminded of this recently. Charisa and I have been preparing for a 5k in the spring. On our journey, we signed up for another 5k. The goal was to run this race with a friend who has not done anything like this in years, which meant it would be at a pace comfortable for her. So my plans were to enjoy it and not push for time. Well, God had plans too.

When we arrived, we found out that our dear friend was sick. This meant we were going to push for time. As we ran, my mind was not in the right place. It had been prepared to run but not hard and not well.

When we look at this metaphor in relation to the 5k, I did not run my best. And being ready in season and out is being ready to run when God says to run spiritually.

After crossing the finish line, I was reminded of Proverbs 24:33-34 “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest; so shall your poverty come like a prowler, and your need like an armed man.” We must be prepared in and out of season.

So my friends, when it comes to the race of life that God has called you to, don’t grow weary and allow outside circumstances to hinder your preparation. We run the race of endurance striving to always be ready for when God calls us to run earlier than we expected.
