“Dad took the wrong turn! We are going to get lost!” my sister cried from the back seat of the car.
“Babe, we are following Dad,” I told her, “and if Dad gets lost so will we. But we are doing this together.”
This was a brief conversation on our way home from Texas one year. My little sister was freaking out because Dad was not following the printed directions she had in her hand. Dad was in the first car ahead of us and, even though we had directions, we were going to follow Dad no matter what. The important part was that we not get separated. If we got lost or arrived at our destination, we would all get there together.
I was reminded of this today and thought how profound it is. So often we are like this with God. We worry and freak out when He does something different. Our life changes directions and we think He has taken the wrong turn. We cry out, “Lord! You took the wrong turn! My life was supposed to head this way, and You are going that way!” But God knows what He is doing. Our job is to follow.
My encouragement to you is to stop worrying about where you thought God was going. We just need to get it in our heads that no matter which turn He takes we are following Him. If we get turned around, or go somewhere totally different then where we thought our destination was, it does not matter; we are going to be wherever we are with Jesus in the lead. Better to be with Jesus somewhere else than following our plan without Him.
Next time you feel that God has taken a turn He was not supposed to, tell yourself, “As Long as I am with You, Jesus, I’ll be okay.”
