“Why were you born?” was a common question I was asked as a child. It was not in exasperation, but to remind me of the answer that follows. “To serve God.” That was the answer when I was growing up, but as my nieces and nephews have come along the answer has changed. The question remains the same but the answer to follow is found in Deuteronomy 6:5 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”
Jesus said that to love God with all that we are is the greatest commandment. Our first focus should be on loving God. He has given us everything. Mom often says, “I love your Dad so much. He is a gift from God, so I should not love the gift more than the Giver. I must love God for giving me your daddy.” Sometimes we get wrapped up in God’s gifts and blessings that we lose sight of Him. We forget to be thankful and show our love. Our first priority is to love God with everything we are and everything we have. If we have this right what is left will fall into place. I encourage you to put God first in your life. If we are running hard after God and seeking His face diligently, not only will we find Him, but He will teach us how to love each other. We will, by following God, more loving, thankful, submissive, better citizens, and less anxious. God will do anything to try and bring our focus back on track, because He loves us. I was walking out the door on my way to work and mom said, “Remember why you were born.” I began reciting the list and God stopped me when I said, “Love God with all.” All? That is when I realized how He wanted to be loved. Before anything and everything. Before our relationships, our jobs, our dreams, our finances, our grades, our hobbies. Before everything.
So my friends, today remember why you were born and double check those priorities.
